Eddington starts slower than a snail on sedatives. I legit thought I was in for two hours of cinematic torture, and I wasn’t alone—two poor bastards in my screening actually walked out 20 minutes in. At that point, I almost wished I’d joined them.
The Shift
Then—bam—something happens. Something big. The whole damn tone and direction of the movie flips on its head, and suddenly I’m thinking, “Oh shit, I’m actually enjoying this.” Trust me, you’ll know the exact moment when it hits. From then on, the film becomes unpredictable in the best way.
What Worked
- Unpredictability: After the shift, you have no clue what’s coming next—and that’s a good thing.
- Political western vibes: A gritty, moody take set in May 2020 New Mexico. Not your average setting, and it works.
- The ending: Completely blindsided me. Not where I thought it was going at all.
What Didn’t Work
- The opening crawl: It drags like hell. If you’re impatient, it’ll test your sanity.
- Pacing imbalance: The shift is awesome, but it makes the first 60 minutes feel even more pointless in hindsight.
Verdict
Eddington is a tale of two movies: one that nearly bored me to death, and one that had me hooked. If you can survive the slow-as-shit start, the payoff is absolutely worth it.
Rating: 3.5/5 stars – boring as hell until it isn’t, then surprisingly badass.
